Venous hypertension leads to swelling of the affected limb. The distance between capillaries becomes larger and nutrients have to diffuse over longer distances. If a tissue defect has to heal, the poorer nutritional status will delay healing. Compression therapy reduces swelling, the capillaries get closer to each other and the wound has a better supply of nutrients.Primary target in chronic venous insufficiency is to reduce hypertension in the venous compartment. This can be done with adequate compression therapy and/or by surgical procedures. |
