If healing is impaired what happens to the wound?
Recent research has investigated into the biology of non-healing wounds. Surprisingly, protease levels in wound fluid were much higher compared with normal healing wounds.

Proteases are required for normal healing but if the levels become excessive healing may be inhibited.

Before we review the situation in chronic wounds we first have to recapitulate what are proteases.

If healing is impaired what happens to the wound?

Normal and impaired healing wounds
In most cases wound healing proceeds from injury to scar without any problem.
Only in few patients an underlying disease interferes with healing giving rise to the different chronic wounds. It is important to realize which disease is inhibiting normal tissue repair processes. If corrected wound healing can get back on track.
