Review of normal tissue repair
Normal wound healing has three major phases.
  • Inflammation (cleansing phase)
  • Granulation tissue build-up
  • Scar remodeling
Inflammation starts within minutes after injury, has an activity peak at day 3-5 and subsides afterwards.
Granulation tissue starts to form at later stages of inflammation. Duration depends on the magnitude of the tissue defect. Some days in clean surgical wounds, weeks in large third degree burn wounds or deep decubitus ulcers.
Scar remodeling can last up to 6-9 months after epithelial wound closure.
