What happens when wound healing goes wrong?
On a cellular and molecular level we know much less about impaired wound healing than for normal tissue repair. After the initial trauma wound healing may progress normally to any phase we have reviewed before. Wounds may become stuck in any phase and cannot reach the next phase in due time. A wound starts to become chronic.

Clinically delayed healing wounds are very well described. Unfortunately, new concepts how to treat these wounds have not been formulated. Despite significant advances in basic research, patients only minimally profited.
